Stop Procrastinating & Just Get Started

Do you ever start the day fresh, full of high hopes and knowing exactly that you need to get done. But then as the day goes on slowly, but surely, you find that you’re not actually getting any of the work done that you need to, because you’re doing other little things, and ultimately putting off the main tasks.

It’s easy to get swept up with these Springy Life Elements, or drifting through your emails & just doing odd little tasks here and there – the internet can especially be a time black hole. One minute it’s 9am, you look again and it’s lunch time, and you’ve achieved nothing that you set out to do…. but hey, don’t worry, you’ve still got the afternoon… right!?… Before you know it, that’s gone and your left with the evening. This cycle can easily drift on for days, weeks, maybe even months, if you’re a good procrastinator!

Just Get Started

The solution is to Just Get Started, without thinking about anything else and especially without allowing yourself to check distractions such as social media and your emails. I often find that doing the following makes the day incredibly more productive;

  1. Get up early. There’s something about getting up early that gives you the feeling of being “ahead of the world”. Having this feeling alone can give you the spur to focus on your work.
  2. If you know what you need to do. Just Get Started. Don’t think about what actions need to be done, how long it will take or any other distractions. Just Get Started and before you know it you’ll be halfway through your objective. If you don’t know what you need to do (but you know you need to do something) then reference your to-do list or external brain or just get started on something that’s playing on your mind.
  3. Don’t open emails until half way through the day. This might be difficult for some people, but by leaving your emails closed, you’re starting the day on your terms and not feeling pressured to do what other people might be asking you for.

If you can be prompt about Just Getting Started, then you’ll find that your day will be incredibly more productive and you’ll get many more things done.
