We’re always putting things off till later (I definitely do), no matter if the task takes 10 seconds or a few hours, we just tend to think “I’ll leave that for now and do it later”…. The problem with doing this is that;
- These “things” build up in your mind’s to-do list, whether consciously or unconsciously
- We end up with a huge list of things to-do whilst still adding to it
- Shit just doesn’t get done
Why do we do this? It doesn’t help us now and it certainly doesn’t help us in the future. Therefore I propose doing the following;
Do It Now!
Sometimes I get an email, but rather than responding straight away, I’ll just leave it for a day or so before I get back to it. Sometimes I never actually get back to the email, then I lose out on a sale, a relationship or something else, that could have been sorted in a few seconds!
Even when I do respond to the email after a few days, the content is the same as what I would have written with an instant response.
You and I can save ourselves a great deal of hassle, by just doing it there and then.
Clearly, there are some things that you can’t apply this to – you actually might not have the time, or you don’t have the information to hand. But for times when you really do have the time (even if you convince yourself that you don’t) and you do have the information… then just do it – you’ll feel better. If you’re having problems making quick decisions then take a look at this post.
Sometimes I’ll spend more time thinking about doing a task, and building up the “horror” in my mind, than it would take to do the job, and have a weight lifted off my shoulders. The key is to not think about “what will happen”, just take each part of the task as it comes and work through it. With this outlook, the job will be done in no time at all.
If we do things right away then;
- We get shit done
- We don’t end up with a backlog
- We have a clearer mind
- Business relationships work better
- People respect you more for getting shit done on time
So let’s do ourselves all a favour, and just do shit, now!
